GDPR regulation coming in to effect 25 May 2018
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), introduced by the European Union, is aimed at the approach all European Union member states adopt towards data regulation. The objective is to unify these and ensure all data protection laws are applied in a consistent manner within the EU.
While many of the main concepts and principles within the GDPR are much the same as the current Data Protection Act, it provides a greater degree of protection for all EU citizens, ensuring their data is not used irresponsibly. The regulation empowers individuals through increased ownership of what, where and how their information is used and shared.
The regulation is due to come into force on 25 May 2018 and despite the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, the regulation still applies to all businesses handling the data of EU residents.
